22 Powerful Coaching Questions

22 powerful questions for you to add to your arsenal of coaching questions.
  • If I wasn't here, what would you do?
  • What advice would you give to a dear friend who was in this situation?
  • What is your commitment on a scale of 1-10 to doing it (Whatever "it" is within the session)? What can you to do get it to a 10?
  • What's the real issue? (Sometimes useful if you feel the coachee needs to get out of story mode and to the bottom line.)
  • What if there were no limits?
  • What are you doing that is getting in the way of your goal? (Insert actual goal in the wording of the coachee, if you know it.)
  • What else? (The shortest question but hold that silence, let the coachee think and then fill the void.)
  • How much control do you have personally for the outcome you want?
  • If you had a magic wand, where would you like to be at the end of this session/our time together?
  • If you knew the answer, what would it be? (Not as daft as it sounds, it helps the coachee look past the roadblock). If you did know? (in response to "I don’t know".)
  • Imagine sharing this with the wisest person you can think of, what would they tell you to do?
  • What rule/belief do you carry with you that might need breaking or changing to achieve this goal?
  • What options do you feel you have when it comes to achieving this goal?
  • What options do you feel aren't available when it comes to achieving this goal? (Great second question in relation to the previous question to see what the coachee views as out of their grasp.)
  • What would the worst-case scenario look like?
  • What would success look like for us working together?
  • What is the best way of us working together?
  • How can we both take responsibility to make this work?
  • What is the best way for you to hold yourself accountable? (Self accountability is a powerful tool.)
  • What would you like to explore next? (Useful if coachee lists a few ideas or issues as this gives the coachee power to choose what is next rather than assuming list order.)
  • We’ve got 10 minutes left, where would you like to go next? (Really good to highlight the session length before a coachee potentially brings a big issue that can’t be unpacked in 10 minutes)
  • What is your biggest take away from this session today? (Useful for self reflection)
